Back in the Saddle

by jonb

You might notice some new features and some general polish in the coming weeks. I'm done with another freelance project and Mamaswap is once again my main priority.

One of my tasks is figuring out how Percy the Crab fits into the header of the site. Say hi, Percy!

Purchasing Back Online!

We have added a captcha before a purchase goes through the site that should stop the spammers for now. Now that Jon added that code we have taken the ability to purchase back online and the site should work as normal. If one of your listings was affected, please feel free to re-list it now. There is no additional fee to re-list an item.

Let's get out there and sell some stuff!

Tally ho!

Site Temporarily Down

It seems we have been hit by an annoying spambot that is making fake purchases. Since we can't get a fix for the problem up for several hours (until Jon gets done with his workday), we are going to take the site offline to stop the attack. If you have received a bizarre purchase from a nonsense email address (such as lvvslq@xkitzf.com) please disregard it.

Once we put the site back up you can always re-list an item without incurring another listing fee. Just go to your storefront, then click the "re-list" button to the right of the item.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me or post them here!

Thanks and tally ho!

New Mamaswap Changes Soon

by jonb
Hey all, Jon here.

I'm just wrapping up a few freelance projects, so I'll soon be wandering through the house looking for something to do. At which point Sarah typically reminds me of all the cool things I could be adding to Mamaswap.

So my new work hasn't kicked off yet, but pretty soon it will, and soon after that, we're going to start making the site more easy, more fun, and more useful. I'm looking forward to it, I know Sarah is, and I hope you are too :)

Shipping is Live!

by jonb

Hurray! When you sell an item on mamaswap, you'll now notice an option for shipping. It took a lot of work, but we're thrilled to be able to announce it today.

There are still a lot of changes coming (for example, a "not in Seattle" buyer's view that only lists items that can be purchased outside of Seattle) but the main work is now finally complete.

For sellers, this means your marketplace just expanded to include everyone in the United States, not just folks in Seattle. More traffic to your items means more sales and more money in your pocket!

For buyers, this means anyone in the country can now use mamaswap, so if you have a family member or friend who's been wanting to use the site but don't live in Seattle, we can finally support them too.

If you see anything acting funny, please let us know. Onward to the next thing!

Swap Meet today!

by jonb

Come join us today (Monday Nov 30th) from 3:30-6:30 pm to swap purchased items, play, and chat.

If you have a bag of stuff you've been meaning to list, just bring it and we'll photograph it and list it right there at the "swap".

You don't need to have bought or sold anything, come and hang out anyway! The idea behind our "swaps" is to hang out and get to know other mamaswappers. Kids of all ages are always welcome and I will have treats (as always).

SELLERS: Please drop your sold items off before the start of the swap.

**Please remember that swaps are for exchanging already bought/sold items. There will be no buying or selling items not already listed on the site at the swap. More info at mamaswap.com/help . Thanks!**

As always, more info is posted here:

Setting up a beta site

by jonb
Back before we launched, we could break the site willy nilly without having to worry about confusing or annoying anyone. But now that we have lots of wonderful people relying on the site, it's important to be cautious.

So I'm setting up a beta section of the site to test out exciting new features, which takes a little bit of time and effort. (For the record, Go Daddy has really good phone technical support.)

But on the plus side: here come some exciting new features! :) Stay tuned.

November's Most-Searched Terms

Now that we're past the Costume! Costume! Costume! madness that is October in the land of search terms, I thought it might be nice to update you all on what people have searched for since the beginning of November. So without further ado, here are the top 20 search terms from 11/1-11/22:

1. Boots
2. Coat
3. Crib
4. Jacket
5. Patagonia
6. Stroller
7. 14 (I'm assuming size 14 here)
8. 16 (again, I think this is probably size 16)
9. Bottle
10. Hat
11. Legos
12. Maternity
13. Pack
14. See Kai Run
15. Shoes
16. Toys
17. 4T
18. 5T
19. 0-3 mos
20. 12 (probably size 12)

And there you have it! Not terribly surprising, seeing as how we've had rainy dreary weather lately. If you have any of these items laying around, you might want to think about listing them! Or bring them to a swap and we'll list them for you! :) The swap schedule is listed at http://www.mamaswap.com/swap_meets

Tally ho!

Post to Facebook is now live!

by jonb
We have a new feature we're really excited about: "Post to Facebook".

To try it out, go to your storefront and
you'll see a new link that says "Post to Facebook". Click that and
you can easily point your friends at the items you're selling. We hope
you like it.

I'd write more, but it's past my bedtime and Elliott is probably going
to wake up in 4 hours if I tempt fate :)

Northwest Enterprising Moms Fall Event

On the 7th we (me, my co-founder Megan and our intrepid go-to gal Sonya) debuted mamaswap at the NorthWest Enterprising Moms Fall Event. NWEM is a fabulous organization that exists solely to lend support to local mom-run businesses. They hold twice yearly events where members can exhibit their companies. It's a really fun time and there are always fantastic giveaways!

Our booth was, of course, put together at the last minute. That's our spiffy new banner (featuring Percy the hermit crab). Megan provided the merchandising for the table, complete with a basket of toys on the floor for the kidlets to play with while their parents learned about the site. Thanks Megan! Sonya and I brought our matching MacBooks and that's the white Williams Sonoma tablecloth I got as a wedding present on our table. I was up late into the night sewing the little sleeves for the PVC pipe structure I made to hang our banner. By the way, building banner frame from PVC pipe is cheap (I maybe spent $3.50 TOTAL) and easy to assemble, transport and troubleshoot. Should you ever need a way to hang a banner without a wall, etc. I highly recommend it!

Sonya, who really needs a proper title (WonderBabe? Head Amazing Person? suggestions?), worked the booth alongside Megan and me and we couldn't have done it without her. She troubleshooted creating a local network between our computers in the absence of internet access (event site FAIL) so that we could share user videos and screenshots. Genius!

We had a great time and met a lot of really wonderful folks who I can't wait to see again at one of our next swaps!

Tally ho!
